Chobe River Excursions

 This morning started at 6:30 with bird viewing for me and fishing for Burt.  Gibson took 3 other guests, myself and Lucky to look along the Rivers edges for an amazing number of bird species.  Many of these are quite colorful.

Burt has fished with Derrick and Lennox, named after the boxer, and caught catfish and had a great time getting to know several of the staff on the boat.  Most live along our route and travel in to our boat for the day, returning to their families at night.  They have generators at home for electricity.



We returned for breakfast and went again to explore other wildlife along the River at 10:30.

Our home for four days on the Zambezi Queen.  









These 4 days we go back and forth over about 25 miles which we get to know landmarks quite well.  Life along the River is abundant. Each day the elephants, impala, kudus baboons and other mammals come down to the River to drink and head back into the forest at night. Hippos and crocs are there at shore waiting for food sources and the bird life is incredible.  After several days in the smaller jet boats I am starting to recognize some of the most common species.

On our third day we return to Botswana immigration to get another PCR COVID test to travel tomorrow to Victoria Falls in Zambia.

 After breakfast we disembark the Queen for the jet boats to take us back to Namibia immigration and Botswana immigration for the same process of health forms and passports before we get to land cruisers to take us to the Chobe national park for wildlife viewing. Bert and I are in the jeep with one other couple and our driver is the owner of this Safari company. Drive Along Coastline to Cape of Good Hope

 Last night was our meet and greet with tour group.  We have tour guide Delia and a trainee Lucky and one other couple besides us so far. Another couple missed the flight to keep town and arrived today that we have not met yet.  Unfortunately, one couple scheduled to be on the tour had to evacuate for hurricane Ida and will not be on our tour. Our drive today started at the hotel at 8:30 and we drove along the coast mostly through cable pool table Mountain national Park. There were lots of bikers and runners all along the road. Many times two narrow lanes of traffic and bikers and runners all sharing the same two lanes. Many of these are training for a huge competition that takes place in March each year.  Also a public outdoor gym was located on the beach. It is much cooler than normal here and they have had an exceptional winter with enough rainfall to fill a reservoir that was down to less than 5% four years ago.  Of course, I was very comfortable in the cool...

Victoria Falls

 Is was kind of sad to leave the Zambezi Queen.  We were treated so well and the scenery was wonderful.such friendly service staff.  We had a final dinner and took a group photo before leaving. The entire tour group is going on to Victoria Falls.  Again, we go through health forms and immigration to leave Namibia, enter Botswana, leave Botswana and enter Zimbabwe.  The town of Victoria Falls has a population of 60,000.  It is small but they have several very nice hotels and a couple grocery stores and quite a few small curio and clothing shops. We are on the main highway through Africa again and trucks are lined up a half mile trying to get through the border.  Most are carrying copper from the mines in Zambia which is exported.  We are told it can take up to two weeks to cross the border.
